About the Legal Fee Index dataset
Legal Fee Index publishes UK legal-fee data captured from solicitors’ SRA Price Transparency disclosures. The SRA Transparency Rules have required this disclosure on every regulated firm’s website since December 2018, so the underlying data has been publicly available for years. This page documents what the dataset contains, how we collect it, how to cite it, and how to license it.
Coverage status
Legal Fee Index is in pilot while national SRA register API access is pending. The schema, methodology, correction route and citation format below are stable; firm records and price-transparency captures will be published as soon as the register seed is available. Firms, advisers and partners can submit public price-transparency pages now.
What we hold
- Identity: firm name and trading name, SRA firm number (the regulator’s unique identifier), full postal address, phone, website, geocoded lat/lng, regulator status (authorised / suspended / intervened / closed).
- Service categorisation: the eight practice areas in scope of the SRA Transparency Rules: residential conveyancing (purchase and sale), uncontested probate, motoring offences, immigration (excl. asylum), employment tribunal (employee and employer), debt recovery (business), and licensing of business premises.
- Pricing: per practice area, per firm — the disclosed pricing model (fixed fee, fee range, hourly rate, mixed, or on-request), the disclosed numbers, VAT inclusion (or explicit absence of statement), typical disbursements, and any caveats the firm publishes.
- Provenance: source URL of the captured price-transparency page, capture timestamp, extraction method.
Regulatory backdrop
The Solicitors Regulation Authority Transparency Rules came into force in December 2018. They require every regulated firm to publish prices and service descriptions for the eight consumer-facing legal services listed above. Compliance is monitored by the SRA and breaches are subject to disciplinary action. Legal Fee Index treats each firm’s published disclosure as the source of truth.

Editorial stance
Legal Fee Index is independent. We have no commercial relationships with solicitors, no paid placements, no referral fees, and no editorial influence from the entities covered. Every published price comes from a solicitor’s own legally mandated disclosure, with the source URL preserved for audit.
